The weather might be dull but that doesn't mean your skin should be.
Keep the winter blues out of your complexion with a few dos and don’ts to keep your skin supple, hydrated and glowing!
DO: Peek at the ingredients on the back
Just as we swap sunnies for scarves, so you should revamp your skin care ‘wardrobe’ as the seasons shift.
Set aside your harsher, oil-stripping sulphate cleansers, peels, astringents and toners to hibernate. Avoid products which include sulphates on the label, a common cleansing ingredient that can cause redness and irritation which winter conditions can aggravate. If you find that your warm-weather skincare regime is irritating your skin, opt for milder products that are free from artificial fragrance, and jam-packed with natural, soothing active ingredients like aloe-vera and green tea such as Youthphoria’s Nutrient gel cleanser.
Avoid that winter ‘chalk face’ by exfoliating away dead skin flakes that lie on the skin’s surface at least once a week. Swap grittier scrubs and masks for gentler chemical exfoliants containing AHAs or Lactic Acid. See Youthphoria’s skin-smoothing AHA Exfoliating Face Scrub.
DO: Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!
Whether it’s the cold outside or the warmth of artificial heating, the low humidity of winter air can be our skin’s worst enemy. Windburn, the friction of the wind against our delicate faces, can peel like sunburn and leave the best of us looking less flawless-ice-princess than ruddy Santa.
Parched skin often makes fine lines and wrinkles more prominent. To prevent tightness in the face, invest in a deeply-hydrating moisturising formula to layer under sunscreen and makeup. Look for moisturisers containing glycerine and sodium PCA, hydrators which helps trap moisturise as well as an antioxidant like Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, highly stable Vitamin C, to protect your skin from the harshest of elements.
Don’t neglect your night and eye creams. Look out for ingredients such as Vitamin B3 and B5 which improve the skin’s keratin, ceramide and lipid production. Youthphoria’s Revitex Youth Regenerating Moisturiser also contains the patented Monk’s Pepper Berry complex with skin-regenerative properties.
DON’T: Skip the SPF!
Harmful UV rays can damage the skin even on days you’re left wondering where the sun is. Opt for broad-spectrum sunscreens with a SPF no lower than 30. Layering this over a moisturizer high in antioxidants can help protect against free radical damage.
DON’T: Forget the rest of you!
Lastly, any bits exposed to the chill will require extra tender loving care. Use a non- greasy moisturiser on the hands such as, Youthphoria rose hip hand cream and an oil-based moisturiser on the feet and pop on cotton socks right afterwards to avoid leaving a sticky-trail about the house.
Remember, no matter how short and cold the days might get, winter is also the best excuse of all to pamper yourself like a queen or king. Stay warm!
